NEW DUTCH VIEWS, DUTCH-MOROCCAN POSTCARD SET
€17,50.-*
Islam comes in all shapes and colors and it can no longer be said to be foreign. It is now Dutch, Western and a part of the national identity and landscape. In January 2018, artist and photographer Marwan Bassiouni began to document the presence mosques in the Dutch landscape by photographing them from a different perspective. He was led into the hearts of cities, suburbs, villages, industrial zones and remote areas. He was led through the entire country’s landscape. Mosques were able to become a part of the Dutch landscape by adapting to the shapes and colors of the local architecture– by building minarets and prayer rooms out of bricks. Through his journey, Bassiouni not only witnessed the diversity of locations in which Muslims are living today, but also the diversity within the Muslim religion itself. Muslims in the Netherlands are from Moroccan, Turkish, Dutch, Surinamese, Egyptian, Somali, Iraqi, Iranian, Indonesian, Tunisian and Pakistani origins among others and each of them have their own customs and mosque aesthetics.
The following set of postcards presents a selection of twelve Dutch-Moroccan mosques from the first New Dutch Views series.
